Clark County - Washington

The Western Pond Turtle (Actinemys marmorata) is a small to medium size turtle that currently lives only on the western coast of the United States and Mexico. At one time they were found as far north as Canada but no longer exist there and are in danger of dying out completely in other areas.

Before the arrival of white people the turtles were so numerous in the area of Fourth Plain along the Columbia River that the natives called the area the “Land of the Mud Turtle.”
